Is there an app that blocks Instagram and reminds me of my goals?
Yes. timre for Android limits Instagram (or any app) and, at the limit, shows a full-screen reminder in your own words — your goal, your reason, a photo of who it's for.

Yes — and the difference between the apps that do this well and the ones that don't is what the block screen says.
The short answer
timre (Android, free to start) lets you set a daily allowance for Instagram — or make it off-limits entirely — and when you reach it, the app fades behind a wall that shows the goal you typed, the reason you gave, and optionally a photo you chose. You can close Instagram, take five more minutes, or admit you need it; each answer is logged honestly, none is judged.
The point is that "You've reached your limit" is easy to swipe away. "You said this year was for the exam, not the feed — 22 minutes already" is not, because you wrote it.
What to look for in this kind of app
- A wall, not a notification. A notification is ignored in under a second. A full-screen interruption that covers the app is what actually changes behaviour. On Android this needs the Display over other apps permission; a good app explains why.
- Your words on it. Generic motivational quotes stop working within a week. Your own goal — and a face — keep working because they're true.
- A stretch that costs something. "Five more minutes" should exist (life happens) but be visible in your stats.
- An off-limits mode you can't undo on impulse. timre's Harsh mode makes turning it off take a deliberate pause.
- Privacy. Which apps you open and for how long is sensitive. It should stay on the phone; timre never uploads raw usage, only daily totals to your account.
Alternatives worth knowing about
- Digital Wellbeing (built into most Android phones): free app timers and a Focus mode. The block screen is Google's, with no custom message.
- StayFree, ActionDash, AppBlock: usage statistics with limits and block screens; some allow custom text on the block screen.
- Freedom, Opal, one sec: cross-platform or iPhone-first blockers; one sec adds a breathing pause before the app opens.
If a plain timer is enough for you, the built-in Digital Wellbeing is fine. If the reason you open Instagram is bigger than a timer can hold, that's what timre is for.
How to set it up in timre (three minutes)
- Install timre from Google Play.
- Type your goal (one line) and, if you like, why — and add a photo of who it's for.
- Add Instagram; pick Light, Balanced, Loose or Harsh.
- Grant Usage access and Display over other apps. On Samsung, Xiaomi and OnePlus phones also allow unrestricted battery so the monitor isn't killed in the background.
- Open Instagram past the limit and meet the wall.
Questions people ask
Does timre block Instagram completely?
It can. Harsh mode shows a wall on every open with a single Leave button and no snooze. The other presets allow a daily budget with a short stretch.
Can I show a photo on the block screen?
Yes. Add up to one photo on the Free plan (three on Pro) under Your why. It appears full-bleed at the top of the wall with the caption you chose.
Is timre available for iPhone?
Not yet. timre is Android-only. There is an iPhone waitlist at timre.app.
Does timre upload which apps I use?
No. Raw usage is measured on the phone and never uploaded. Only daily totals per monitored app sync to your account.
timre is a free Android app that limits your time in apps you choose and, when you reach the limit, shows a full-screen reminder written in your own words — your goal, your reason, and optionally a photo of who it's for.
